Suraksha Aur Sammaan
A world needs to be envisioned where children get the right to live a dignified life free from Sexual Abuse.
The Problem
Child sexual abuse is the use of a child for sexual gratification by an older or more powerful person. The offender is usually an adult, but could also be a more powerful child. Both girls and boys are vulnerable. It is a crime punishable by law.
As many as 1.28 lakh cases of crime against children were registered in 2020, according to the ‘Crime in India 2020’ report published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). cases of sexual offences including child rape under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) accounted for 38.8% of all cases. Of the total 28,065 POCSO cases, in 96% of cases the accused was a known person. The age profile of the victims of sexual offences in 2020 shows that 640 were below six years, 2,540 between 6 to to 12, as many as 11,029 between 12 to 16 and 14,118 between 16 to 18. These include both boys and girls.
Why Suraksha Aur Sammaan?
Preventive measures designed to ward off strangers will not be completely effective, as children do not know how to ward off unwanted sexual advances from their known relatives or acquaintances, whom they trust. What really needs to be done is to take solid steps towards educating children and adults about personal safety of children.
What do we do?
We believe that prevention of child sexual abuse is possible. So, we work for prevention of child sexual abuse by creating awareness among the children and their caring adults – parents, teachers and social workers.
As part of our Suraksha Aur Sammaan project, we work with primary and high school students by making personal safety skills curriculum a part of their time table. This is a five-month project where we teach children how to identify, avoid and disclose sexual abuse. We also provide self-defense training to children.
Our Sreyobhilaashi project aims at educating adults about protecting children from sexual abuse. Click here to know more about this project.
