EDUCATION

The condition of marginalized children is worrisome as they don’t even have access to basic needs like stationery, notebooks etc. that can at least boost their morale towards education. Despite having capabilities, living in adverse conditions lowers their sense of belonging and hence lack or interest in education. They are not able to sustain in a school for a longer period of time because of the non availability of basic pre-requisites. Lack of skilled teachers and basic infrastructure is other cause of concern which hinders the growth of poor children.

Identifying the problem areas that hinder the growth of these children in terms of education and well-being and extending support even in small way can make a great difference to their lives. Learning Space foundation is focused to help the needy students and schools where there is a lack of basic resources. Working towards providing a better learning environment for children in whichever way possible is something we try to do with support from our donors.

OBJECTIVES

  • Reduction in school drop-outs due to lack of basic requisites like notebooks, stationery etc.
  • Sponsor Vidya Volunteers where Student Teacher ratio is huge
  • Organize extra-curricular activities for overall development of children
  • Support schools with basic infrastructure
  • Conduct capacity building workshops for teachers and staff of schools and shelter homes

Village Learning Spaces

Village Learning Spaces are started to bridge the learning gap due to digital deprivation in extraordinarily challenging times of Covid 19. Due to the ongoing pandemic, many children are missing schools. Though online classes are happening, not every child is able to afford this. Especially in rural and tribal areas, there is a huge gap. So, to make sure children refresh their knowledge as well as learn basic literacy and numeracy skills, they need to spend at least a couple of hours in learning. With this aim and with help from Aalambana Foundation and Around29 Digital Media Solutions, we launched Village Learning Spaces at two villages – Kondapuram and Taniperthy in Mulugu district on 11 Nov, 2020. It was a 3-month program to help 75 students with basic literacy and numeracy skills. We provided text books, note books and other stationery and appointed teachers to help children. The classes were conducted with limited number of children by following the social distancing guidelines.

Co & Extra Curricular Activities

We organize co and extracurricular activities for the students to promote positive self-concept and sense of achievement in them.

  • We conducted mandal-level elocution competitions to students of high schools in Nampally and Khairatabad mandals in Hyderabad in Jan 2018. About 750 students of 24 high schools of these mandals participated in the competition.
  • We conducted a drawing competition on National Girl Child Day in Jan 2019 at 5 government primary and high schools. 300 children participated in the competition.
  • We support sports events of a few schools on special days such as Independence Day, Republic Day, School annual day etc.

Capacity Building Workshops for Teachers

Teachers have one of the most demanding vocations in the world and in order to fulfill their important roles with excellence, they need training, motivation as well as regular mental and emotional rejuvenation. We conduct workshops, organize training and building capacities of local communities, school management committees, teachers and Anganwadi workers (pre-primary government educators). Our Capacity Building workshops are created to bring out the best in the teachers, help them scale their impact and inspire them to take things from a fresh perspective.  These workshops enhance the efficacy of teachers for improving the quality of teaching. SWOT analysis, lesson planning for active learning, effective classroom management, presentation skills, digital literacy, technology aided education, lifelong learning, inclusion, empathy etc. are some of the important topics covered. We design these workshops based on the requirement of specific institutions and provide customized sessions. So far we trained about 400 teachers from government schools of Nampally and Khairatabad mandals, Rainbow Homes and Snehghars, and a few Anganwadis in Hyderabad.

Community service projects by volunteers

Below are a few projects taken up by student volunteers during their summer breaks.
