Sreyobhilaashi
Children will be free from sexual abuse when every citizen takes personal responsibility for child protection.
Child safety is everyone’s responsibility! We all need to look at this issue, not look away.
Need
Child sexual assault is a lot more common than we may think. We all have a role to play in protecting children. The safety of children and young people is the shared responsibility of parents and families, supported by the community, government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Immediate family can play a significant role in protecting their children in two ways – directly, through the strong external barriers afforded by parent supervision, monitoring, and involvement; and indirectly, by promoting their children’s self-efficacy, competence, well-being, and self-esteem, which will help them become less likely targets for abuse and more able to respond appropriately and disclose abuse if it occurs.
While immediate family plays a vital role in protecting their children from sexual assaults, children will be protected only when every citizen takes personal responsibility for child protection. This will start when people show willingness to have difficult conversations, change the assumptions about child sexual abuse survivors and perpetrators, and have the courage to act when they have concerns about the children in their vicinity.
What do we do?
Sreyobhilaashi program is for all the adults from different walks of life who are concerned about child safety and it aims to empower adults to educate children about body safety. As part of this, we provide training to parents and other caring adults, teachers, police personnel, hostel wardens, people working in childcare homes and other NGOs.
